Gum pain that gets worse over time is commonly caused by food that's stuck under your gums. Popcorn is a common offender. Because the popcorn kernel doesn't break down over time, it can stay trapped under your gum for a long time.

The longer it stays there, the greater the chance the gum will become irritated and infected, and the pain will get worse.

It can cause an infection, called an abscess.
