How a Dentist Can Pull a Tooth that is Broken Off At the Gum Line

When a tooth is broken and the portion of the tooth that is broken off at the gum line, it can be difficult for a dentist to pull it. This is because when pulling a tooth, there needs to be as much of the root still intact to the tooth. If there isn’t enough root left, then it will probably require more invasive treatment to remove it.

When a person has a broken tooth, it is important to see a dentist as soon as possible. A dentist will x-ray the tooth to find out how bad the break is. They will determine whether or not they can repair it or if it needs to be removed.

Treatment for a broken tooth depends on the severity of the break. A dentist may be able to fix the tooth by filling in the crack with dental cement. Or, they may need to remove it completely. If it is broken at the jawline, it will most likely need to be removed. However, if there is enough left, they may choose to cap the tooth. It will be entirely up to the dentist.

What We Need to Know if Our Tooth is Broken Off at the Gum Line

This is a common dental emergency when the tooth is broken off at the gum line. It can happen as a result of a fall or other traumatic incident.
The first thing that you need to do if this happens to you is to make sure that the tooth base (the part of the tooth attached to your gum) stays clean and dry. This will help it from getting infected and promote healing.

Next, use some gauze or a clean cloth to try and gently cover the exposed part of the broken-off tooth. You can leave the gauze in your mouth, should there be any sharp edges to prevent your tongue and cheeks from getting scraped up while you call the dentist. A broken tooth is nothing to mess around with, you need to call your dentist for an emergency appointment right away.

If you can’t get to an emergency dentist within 24 hours, soak your mouth with saltwater. This should be done twice daily for 20 minutes each time.
